Ports In Storms

Ports In Storms

As the UK deals with the remnants of Storms (Jonas, the most recent, which has hot footed itself across to our shores from North America.) Port Operators, Ship Operators and Freight Forwarders alike put their heads in their hands!

While flooding causes it’s own problems – it’s the wind that wreaks havoc with the Ports. From getting the ships in and out of port safely to the delicate operation of loading and unloading cargo. Huge cranes are used at the waters edge to lift containers on or off ships. These cranes can only operate safely in calm conditions.Dangerous Goods Shipping options

Depending on the crane and the direction of the wind. Some cranes will actually stop operating when storm winds exceed between 35mph and 45mph. So as you can imagine, when the forecast is predicting gale force winds or stroms, it is unlikely that there will be much movement dockside until things are a lot calmer.

Unfortunately these delays can result in unexpected delays and costs. This really is no ones fault, and we all do our very best to minimise the impact on our customers. If you have any questions about your freight, please don’t hesitate to call the team on 01392 369923.
