LCL (Less than Container Load)

LCL allows you to start out with small shipments. It gives you the flexibility of shipping them when they are ready, rather than having to wait until you have enough to fill a 20′ container.

When you are shipping via LCL you will pay per cubic meter or per metric ton for the space inside the consolidators container. You are charged based on weight or the cube depends on the volume and density of your products. For example a shipping crate of silk scarves would most likely be charged on the size of the crate. A pallet containing hydraulic motors would most likely be charged on the weight of the shipment.

Things to remember when shipping LCL

This also applies at the other end when the container carrying your shipment arrives in the UK it is taken to a CFS/ICD (Inland Clearance Depot) to be unpacked from the container. This can take anything from 3 – 7 days before collection from the depot can be arranged.You will need to remember to allow extra time when shipping LCL as the shipment will need to be delivered to the CFS Container Freight Station first. Here the consolidator will then load your shipment into the container with all the other shipments that it has. They often require the cargo delivered to them 5 – 10 days prior to to the vessel sailing.
